Cloth made from Indigo resist-dyed cotton. This cloth probably comes from the Dogon. Such textiles are commonly found throughout West Africa and most specifically among the Dogon, Mossi, Mende, Bamana, Senufo, Hausa, Fulani, Igbo, Yoruba, and so forth. The indigo resist-dyed cotton cloth is made of several strips sewn together. The background on this textile is in blue indigo. Each strip or section contains abstract designs in dark set against a deep indigo field. This cloth in blue recalls traditional and old styles of textile-making.

This cloth is made out of cotton dyed with indigo pigment using the resist-dye technique. The design overstretched with raffia. Paul Gebauer wrote an interesting description of the technique used in the fabrication of such textiles: ” The local handspun cotton was woven into narrow strips, each about two inches wide, and then sewn together, edge to edge, to form the cloth” Guided by a rough outline, the cloth was stitched together tightly with dye-resistant raffia fiber. The stitched fabric was then dyed in indigo.”
