Salvador Dali

1904-1989, Spain.

Dali attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. He devoured philosophical works and Freud, and he discovered Cubism, Futurism and Metaphysical Arts in magazines. He had one-man shows in Barcelona in 1925 and in Madrid in 1926.He harmonized the example of Gris, de Chirico and Carra with the refined methods of the Old Masters.Sometime during 1928 Dali made a brief excursion to Paris, where he met Picasso.Andre Breton, Surrealism’s central figure, appointed him an official Surrealist.Within a short time Dali was to become the movement’s most spectacular exponent. In his art he has succeeded in achieving the synthesis of what Andre Breton called a retrograde craft with the most extreme inventions of modern culture. His graphic oeuvre comprises etchings and lithographs, which have evolved parallel to his paintings.
Dali illustrated Dante’s Divine Comedy with 101 wood engravings. The poem recounts the tale of the poet’s journey through Hell and Purgatory guided by Virgil. After repenting his faults, he is joined by Beatrice for the final leg of the journey through Paradise to receive a glimpse of God.Dali often equated Gala, his wife and inspiration, with Dante’s Beatrice.Like Dali, Dante’s symbolism is complex but highly rational. Both men had a keen knowledge of scientific studies in geology, optics and mathematics.Dali’s Divine Comedy will go down in the history of art as a work of the artist’s prime years, the early 1950’s.

Shepard Fairey “Duality of Humanity 5” Framed, Pencil Signed & Numbered Print https://www.satlanti.shop/product/shepard-fairey-duality-of-humanity-5-framed-pencil-signed-numbered-print/ https://www.satlanti.shop/product/shepard-fairey-duality-of-humanity-5-framed-pencil-signed-numbered-print/#respond Thu, 26 Sep 2024 22:07:21 +0000 https://satlanti.shop/product/shepard-fairey-duality-of-humanity-5-framed-pencil-signed-numbered-print/

From the series “The Duality of Humanity”. It is a striking example of his work showing incredible visual detail as well as expressing an emotional message through what the artist references as “reverse propaganda”. Fairey used this series to express the parallels of warfare of the past and present and the ever present dichotomy of the human condition, “human struggle between good and bad, hope and fear.”

This piece is a great addition to any collection and is a great example of Fairey’s work as it has evolved and grown over the years.

Pablo Picasso, “Vollard Suite” (after*).

– Lithograph of 1200 copies
– Edition: 470/1200
– Edition SPADEM
– Sheet size: 32 x 42 cm
– Total size: 40 x 50 cm

Numbered in pencil, printed signature, test mark in lower left corner*.

The 100 original illustrations date back to 1930-1937, when Picasso drew the complete series, commissioned by Vollard, the art dealer.
Acid-free, museum quality, framed.
Arches paper cut by hand.
S.P.A.D.E.M., Paris, 1973.

* Sometimes, the artist drew a mark or figure on the edge of the stone or litho plate to test how the acid would react. This mark was usually destroyed before printing, but sometimes remained, not just on the test print but on the entire print series. This is a case in point.

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, more simply known as Pablo Picasso (Malaga, October 25th, 1881 – Mougins, April 8th, 1973), was a Spanish painter and sculptor, and one of the most influential of the 20th century.

A crucial intersection between 19th century tradition and contemporary art, Picasso was an innovative and versatile artist who left an indelible mark on the history of art as the founder – together with Georges Braque – of Cubism. Following a rather tormented childhood – which is clearly expressed in his paintings from the so-called blue and pink periods – he shot to fame in the 1920s; his universally-renowned works include “Les demoiselles d’Avignon” (1907) and “Guernica” (1937).

* the term after means a graphic work created after the artist’s death using an original plate.
