Looking for a historical Dutch Design bookcase?

–

A large modernist bookcase with an integrated desk designed by the Dutch architect Emile Estourgie for his own home in 1948/1949.

Emile Estourgie was the son of Charles Estourgie which was a famous Dutch architect in the 1920s. Charles was a pupil of Eduard Cuypers who had his architectural firm in Amsterdam.

Note: for the real interested readers. Eduard was a nephew of the (world) famous Pierre Cuypers and also was the tutor of Michel de Klerk.

The house of Emile Estourgie and especially the interior is mentioned by the foundation; “Historical Interiors” in their project Reconstructing Holland (1940-1965). The projects are developed by Barbara Laan, who works as a specialist in interior history.

The design of this bookcase/desk is strongly influenced by the “De Stijl” movement. The primary color scheme makes it’s appearance playfull and basic.

The new owner of the house, which is a historical building, decided that the bookcase had to leave. I have tried to pursued the owner not to do so but the insisted to do so. This way this bookcase ended in my possession.

Therefore it is important to keep the story of this kind of furniture alive.
